DIY Composting

Composting at home can be easy if you are dedicating to tending your compost pile. Below we will share some home composting techniques and resources to help you get started.

Vermicomposting (worm-composting)

Vermicomposting is one of the most efficient home composting methods. The process involves making a worm bin, creating the 'bedding', and adding worms. As you add your food scraps the bin, the worms will make their way up from the bedding and start to digest the material.  The end result is a quick turn around worm powered digester that can live in your basement or pantry.

Common Pitfalls:

  • Negligence - The worms need the right environment in order to survive. They are resilient but can die if they are left without food and moisture.
  • Too much nitrogen - There has to be a balance of nitrogen rich material (think wet food scraps like banana peels, leftovers, and coffee grounds) and carbon rich materials like newspaper, cardboard, and yard trimmings.
  • Too dry - You worms can dry out if they don't have enough moisture.
